GRH Consulting - Bespoke Database Systems for Business

Remote Site Links

Our systems can operate across remote sites. There are 3 main scenarios.

1. Dial In

A remote PC simply dials in to the main office, and runs the database.

While there can are hardware and network requirements that may involve extra cost, generally, this is the least expensive option.

Typical software required for the remote PC or laptop would be PC Anywhere, VNC  or Remote Desktop.

2. Direct Link

A single database is maintained at one location (E.g. head office). Remote users access this database through broadband.

This is suitable where real-time is required by a number of users. It becomes particularly important where real-time is required (i.e. where a user's changes need to be instantly seen by all other users).

3. Database Replication

A different database is maintained at each location (E.g. branch office or laptop).

At regular intervals, the database are synchronised with the primary database

This solution probably offers the greatest operating speed for users, but is only suitable where real-time processing is not required (E.g. daily updates from each location are sufficient). It is probably the most expensive solution.

An example would be a Contact Management System, where sales reps would maintain their own contact data on their laptops. They would have a fast local system, but also have the advantages of a centralised database. At regular intervals with a push of a button, they would upload changes to the head office database, and download changes from other users.
